Silhouettes

Unlike many artists, his stuff gets better and better. His earlier work shares a sense of stasis, futility, and despair— Hopper meets Kafka meets Sisyphus. This has given way to sheer panic and terror. There’s a dynamism in these recent drawings quite suited to this Age of Anxiety.

Statement

Continuing a long-time interest in figures in landscapes, this series follows closely the tone and tenor of the Gatherings series except drawn from the perspective of the outsider–skeptical, apprehensive, nervous. The figures in these landscapes, drawn without faces or specifics, are anonymous and uncanny, sometimes appearing threatening, sometimes reassuring, but never viewed without being on guard.

I am not a political artist but this series is the closest I've come. No dark humor, no cynicism, no irony...just plain horror.
